iPhone: Photo Rotate

My second iPhone App, Photo Rotate is now on sale in the App Store, for a tiny AU$1.19 (US$0.99). This app does one thing – rotates photos. Sometimes, when holding your iPhone at a strange angle and taking a photo, the orientation of the photo is incorrect. This app lets you correct the rotation of the photo, so you can view it correctly, or upload it to a site such as facebook the correct way up.

1. Select the photo from your camera roll or photo library

2. Rotate the photo until its the correct way up

3. Save the rotated photo to the camera roll.

Hi there – does it reduce the quality of the pics to do this?

The resolution of the pic isn’t changed, just rotated (ie iPhone camera takes photos at 1200×1600 – this stays the same). The JPG compression used to save the file back to the Camera Roll (using Apple’s library) does seem to be higher than the camera saves natively, so the resulting file is slightly smaller. However I certainly can’t tell the difference by looking.

Shot a number of photos using the iphone some in portrait and others in landscape to see how the program handles the rotation process. FLAWLESS. However, I had some photos that were taken on a Canon Rebel XTi at a very high resolution and were then reduced in size and cropped to an non-standard picture size. Photo Rotate was not able to handle the non-standard picture size smoothly. It appeared to over stretch the non-conventional picture causing a blury result.

Photos taken with the iphone are handled perfectly. No reduction in clarity or quality.

Overall I would highly recommend this program for standard size pictures.

I have an iPod Touch 2G. I import photo albums from Photoshop Elements 7. In PSE7 on my PC, the photos all display with the correct orientation as my Panasonic digicam has an orientation sensor and always gets it right.

But sometimes photos imported in portrait mode, display on the iPodT (in vertical position) on their side. When I turn the iPodT to horizontal mode, the photo flips to full screen but still sideways like a bad joke. This is a very frustrating bug.

What I want to be able to do on the iPodT is to rotate a photo by 90 deg., or 270 deg., and then store/save the result in place in the existing album replacing the sideways photo, a simple concept. Having the rotated photo be placed in some other folder is not useful to me. Can Photo Rotate rotate an imported photo IN PLACE?

    I think that Photo Rotate

Unfortunately Apple don’t allow third party application write access to anywhere apart from the Camera Roll (iPhone) or Saved Photos (iPodTouch) directories. For purposes such as yours this does mean there is no way to correct the rotation of a photo ‘in place’ with Photo Rotate (or any application that doesn’t come from Apple itself).

Random question: I was told to start a blog so that my clients or potential clients could connect with me, I am a photographer. Do you find that happening with your readers?

I dont really have clients in the same sense are you. No real connection to be made.
